WIESBADEN – On 1 January 2021, the number of public service pensioners amounted to 1,360,800 in accordance with the public officials’ and soldiers’ pensions law. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this was an increase of 1.5% on a year earlier. The pensioners received an average gross pension of 3,160 euros (2020: 3,110 euros). In addition, roughly 376,500 surviving dependants received relevant pension payments (+0.1%). The expenditure for pensions of the former public officials amounted to 51.0 billion euros, or roughly 1.5% of the gross domestic product, in 2020. 8.1 billion euros were spent on surviving dependants’ pensions.
