Press Number of households receiving housing allowance up 22.6% in 2020

WIESBADEN – At the end of 2020, roughly 618,200 households in Germany received housing allowance. They accounted for 1.5% of all main residence households. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the number of recipient households increased by 22.6%, or about 113,800, compared with 2019. At the end of 2019, roughly 504,400 households had received housing allowance. The increase was due to the housing allowance reform which took effect at the beginning of 2020. As a result, more households have been entitled to housing allowance. In addition, losses in household income due to the coronavirus crisis may have contributed to the increase.
