• Lower infant mortality: 100 years ago, the number of girls who died during their first year of life was 41 times higher, while that of boys was 45 times higher than today
WIESBADEN – People live longer and our society grows older because of medical advances and rising prosperity. In 2020, 20,465 people in Germany were aged 100 years or over. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the number of centenarians increased by 3,523 compared with 2019. The number of oldest old was higher than ever before during the last ten years. In 2020, not only the absolute number of people in this age group was highest but also their proportion in the total population, which stood at 0.025% and exceeded the 2011 figure (0.018%).
