WIESBADEN – There is a huge strain on roads, bridges and tunnels in Germany. For this reason, they need to be constantly repaired and maintained or, as in the case of the Salzbachtal Bridge on the A66 motorway near Wiesbaden, they need to be demolished at short notice and reconstructed. In the last ten years, builders were faced with significant price increases. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the prices of road construction operations in Germany rose by 29.1% from 2011 to 2020. The prices of bridge construction operations increased by about a quarter (+24.1%) in the same period. In this context, construction price indices reflect price movements in the new construction of roads and bridges. The relevant survey collects information on the prices of representative construction operations such as earthwork, concrete work or asphalt surfacings in road construction.
