Press Fertility rate slightly down in 2020

Fathers on average three years older than the mothers of newborn children

WIESBADEN – In 2020 the number of newborns was 773,144. Compared with 2019, the number of newborn babies declined by roughly 5,000. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the total fertility rate was 1.53 children per woman in 2020. This was only slightly less than in 2019 (1.54 children per woman). However, the rate declined for the fourth year in a row. The number of women in the important fertile age between 26 and 37 years was down year on year for the first time since 2011 (-0.5%).
