Press release No. 340 of 14 July 2021
- Smallest increase since 2011
- Small increase also due to the coronavirus pandemic
- Marked increase in number of people seeking protection with temporary suspension of deportation
WIESBADEN – Just under 1.86 million people seeking protection were registered in the Central Register of Foreigners (AZR) at the end of 2020. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the number of people seeking protection who were registered in the AZR rose by 1%, or 18,000, on the previous year. That was a smaller increase than in 2019 (+3%) and the smallest since 2011 (+0.5%). One of the reasons of this development is presumably the travel restrictions adopted during the coronavirus pandemic. People seeking protection are foreigners who, referring to international law, humanitarian or political reasons, are staying in Germany, according to AZR information.
