WIESBADEN – Provisional results of the causes of death statistics show that the COVID-19 disease was indicated on 36,291 cause of death certificates in 2020. It was the cause of death in 30,136 cases, while it was a concomitant disease in 6,151 cases. According to these first provisional data of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), people died of COVID-19 in 83% of these cases, that is, the disease was the underlying cause of death. In 17% of the cases, the cause of death was different, but people died with COVID-19 as a concomitant disease. This is shown by the provisional results of the causes of deaths statistics which are for the first time published on a monthly basis from reference month January 2020 and cover almost 92% of all deaths up to the time of the present evaluation.
