Press release No. 292 of 23 June 2021
WIESBADEN – Substances affecting the climate have an impact on global warming and contribute to climate change. The strongest known greenhouse gas is sulphur hexafluoride (SF6 ). Over a period of 100 years, its contribution to the greenhouse effect is 22,800 times greater than that of carbon dioxide (CO2). The climate impact of the quantity of SF6 sold by domestic gas traders to businesses in Germany in 2020 corresponds to 16.7 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents (global warming potential). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was a decrease in the emission potential of SF6 of more than one third compared with 2016.
