Press release No. 287 of 21 June 2021
- Net immigration fell sharply in the pandemic year of 2020
- Increase in deaths, slight decrease in births
Number of very elderly aged 80 or over rose by 4.5% on 2019
WIESBADEN – At the end of 2020, 83.2 million people were living in Germany. This means that the population of Germany remained nearly unchanged year on year (-12,000 people), following continuous population growth from 80.3 million in 2011 to 83.2 million in 2019. The development in the pandemic year of 2020 was due to two factors: first, reduced net immigration, which was down from 294,000 in 2019 to 209,000 in 2020, according to provisional results. Second, the excess of deaths over births rose from 161,000 to 212,000. As a result, lower net immigration just offset the birth deficit. It was not sufficient for population growth.
