- Both number of traffic accident fatalities and mileage in 2020 down by almost 11% on 2019
- Below-average decrease in number of people killed on motorcycles and bicycles since 1991
- Most accident fatalities are still car occupants despite above-average decrease
WIESBADEN – In 2020, 2,719 people died in road traffic accidents in Germany, according to figures released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). This was a decrease of 10.7% compared with 2019. The development of accidents in 2020 was strongly characterised by decreasing traffic due to the coronavirus pandemic. According to provisional calculations of the Federal Highway Research Institute, the total mileage of all motor vehicles in 2020 was down by almost 11% on the previous year.
