Press No marked impact of the first lockdown on the number of births in Germany

Expected increase of 0.8% in the number of births from December 2020 to February 2021 is within the usual range of fluctuations

Press release No. 149 of 26 March 2021

WIESBADEN – A first evaluation of the births reported shows that the first lockdown to tackle the coronavirus pandemic, which was imposed from 22 March to the beginning of May 2020 and included far-reaching contact restrictions, had no considerable impact on the number of births in Germany. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), reports that roughly 182,000 cases of children born between December 2020 and February 2021 and thus fathered during the first lockdown have been reported so far. The number of births is 0.8% higher than the number recorded during the pre-crisis months of December 2019 to February 2020. However, this change is within the usual range of fluctuations of the monthly birth figures.
