Press More than one in two babies had a brother or sister when they were born in 2020

WIESBADEN – According to an estimate of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), roughly 360,000 (47%) of the 770,000 newborns were born as the first child in 2020. A total of 270,000 (35%) babies were born as the second and 140,000 (18%) as the third or further child to a mother. Compared with 2009 when information on the total order of births to mothers was for the first time collected in united Germany, the numbers and proportions regarding the first child and further children have changed markedly. In 2009, roughly 665,000 children were born; these were about 105,000 less than in 2020. The proportion of first births (50%) was higher in 2009, while that of second births (34%) as well as third and further births (16%) was lower compared with 2020.
