Press 2.8 million pupils taught at primary schools in Germany in the current school year of 2020/21

  • 568,000 pupils had special educational needs in the school year of 2019/2020
  • Roughly one third (or 205,000) of all teachers taught at primary schools in the school year of 2019/2020
  • 786,000 people worked in child day care centres in Germany in 2020

WIESBADEN – Since mid-December 2020, distance learning has been part of the school routine in all of Germany. Now most Länder plan to resume in-school teaching at least of younger pupils on Monday next week. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that, according to provisional results, roughly 2.8 million primary school pupils are being taught at schools of general education in the current school year of 2020/2021. A total of 8.4 million children and young people are attending schools of general education in Germany.
