Press Bush berry harvest in 2020: yields down 9% on 2019

Late frosts and dry periods were main causes of lower yields

WIESBADEN – In 2020, just over 35,800 tonnes of bush berries were harvested in Germany; the area under cultivation was slightly smaller than 9,400 hectares. The area under cultivation remained almost unchanged compared with the previous year, while the quantity harvested was down by 9%. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that cultivated blueberries were one type of bush berries grown again on a larger area compared with 2019. The area under cultivation was just under 3,300 hectares (+4%) in 2020. However, yields per hectare declined by 27%. Amounting to 11,300 tonnes, the quantity of blueberries harvested was down by nearly one quarter (-24%) compared with 2019. Nonetheless, cultivated blueberries accounted for almost one third (32%) of the total bush berry yields.
