Press Well over a quarter of the total area of big cities in Germany is used for agricultural purposes

Online atlas provides updated results on land use

Press release No. 049 of 3 February 2021

WIESBADEN – Fields and meadows are a familiar sight in many big cities in Germany. On average, well over a quarter (27.1%) of the total area of German cities with 100,000 inhabitants or more was used for agricultural purposes in 2019. There are, however, considerable differences between the 81 big cities. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the agricultural area as a proportion of the total area ranged from 4.0% to 55.8%. Erfurt (55.8%), Hamm (52.9%), Salzgitter (49.7%) and Gütersloh (48.3%) recorded the highest proportions of agricultural area. The lowest percentages were found in Berlin (4.0%), Herne (8.3%), Kaiserslautern (8.4%) and Oberhausen (8.8%). These figures and other results are shown by the updated Online Atlas on Land Use (only in german) of the statistical offices of the Federation and the Länder.
