WIESBADEN – Apples form the far largest group of orchard fruit harvested in Germany. Based on final harvest results, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that 1.02 million tonnes of apples were harvested in 2020. This was 3% more than a year earlier (991,500 tonnes), but 15% less compared with the record year 2018. In that year, 1.20 million tonnes of apples were harvested, the largest quantity since 1992. In 2020, the per capita apple yields amounted to more than 12 kilograms in Germany. Baden-Württemberg (403,200 tonnes or 39%) and Niedersachsen (279,700 tonnes or 27%) accounted for the largest quantities of apples harvested.
