Press Three quarters of municipal sewage sludge were incinerated in 2019, one quarter was reused

WIESBADEN – In 2019, the quantity of disposed sewage sludge from municipal waste water treatment plants in Germany remained nearly unchanged at 1.74 million tonnes of dry matter compared with the previous year. This was a decrease of 0.4% compared with the 2018 figure. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that, just as in the previous year, 74% of the disposed sewage sludge were incinerated (1.29 million tonnes). Roughly 25% of municipal sewage sludge (0.43 million tonnes) were used in agriculture, for landscaping or in other material recovery operations.
