Press Coronavirus vaccination: proportion of people aged 80 or over highest in Sachsen (8.6%)

Press release No. N 082 of 11 December 2020

WIESBADEN – At the beginning of next year, vaccinations against the coronavirus will start. The Standing Committee on Vaccination of the Robert Koch Institute has proposed prioritisation according to which people aged 80 or over should be vaccinated first. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that roughly 5.7 million of the population in Germany (6.8%) belonged to the age group of people aged 80 or over in 2019. The proportion of that age group was highest in Sachsen, followed by Sachsen-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Thüringen.
The age structure of the population varies between the Länder. In Sachsen, 8.6% of the population (349,000) were aged 80 or over, in Sachsen-Anhalt 8.3% (182,000) and in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Thüringen 7.9% each (127,000 and 169,000 people, respectively) - always in relation to the total population of the relevant Land. The Länder will coordinate the setting up of the vaccination centres.
