WIESBADEN – On 1 January 2020, the number of public service pensioners amounted to 1,340,200 in accordance with the public officials’ and soldiers’ pensions law. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was an increase of 2.1% on a year earlier. The pensioners received an average gross pension of 3,110 euros (2019: 2,970 euros). In addition, roughly 376,100 surviving dependants received relevant pension payments (-0.2%). The expenditure for pensions of the former public officials amounted to 48.8 billion euros, or roughly 1.4% of the gross domestic product, in 2019. 7.9 billion euros were spent on surviving dependant’s pensions.
