Adjusted gender pay gap unchanged at 6% in 2018

• Difference in earnings between men and women in western Germany almost three times that in eastern Germany
• Gender pay gap in Germany markedly higher than the EU average
• Men in Germany earned an average gross 4.37 euros per hour more than women in 2018
• 71% of the earnings gap is due to structural factors, meaning for instance that women work more often in low-paid branches and occupations and reach less often executive positions

WIESBADEN – Women in Germany earned an average 19% less than men in 2019. The earnings difference between men and women, the unadjusted gender pay gap, thus was 1 percentage point lower than in 2018, falling under 20% for the first time, according to revised results. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the adjusted gender pay gap, which can be calculated only every four years, remained unchanged at 6% in 2018 compared with 2014.
