Press release No. N 076 of 19 November 2020

• In 2019, the risk of poverty and social exclusion was 2.3 percentage points lower for under 18 year olds in Germany than a year earlier.
• Only 15% of the 55,500 cases of child endangerment were made known by the families themselves in 2019.
• More than a third of the population in Germany lived in families with at least one child in 2019.

WIESBADEN – The International Children's Rights Day on 20 November focuses in particular on the question whether children and young people grow up safely, also during the corona pandemic. Even before the start of the corona crisis, nearly one in seven children in Germany was at risk of poverty and social exclusion. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports, however, that this proportion of the under 18 year olds (15% or 2.1 million) was lower in 2019 than in the previous years. The proportion of children and young people at risk of poverty and social exclusion had been 17.3% in 2018 and 21.7% in 2010.
