Press Electricity production in the 1st half of 2020: wind power most important energy source

More electricity from renewable than from conventional energy sources

Press release No. 352 of 11 September 2020

WIESBADEN – In the first six months of 2020, a total of 248.2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity were produced and fed into the grid in Germany. 128.4 billion kilowatt-hours (51.8%) of electricity were produced from renewable energy sources. In the first half of 2019, the proportion was just 43.4%. According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the production of electricity from renewable sources increased by 8.3% compared with the first half of 2019. The largest increase (+12.9%) was recorded for electricity from wind power, which was mainly due to a very windy first quarter of 2020. Wind power (29% of the total electricity feed-in) was the most important energy source for domestic electricity production during the first six months of 2020.
