Press release No. N 041 of 27 July 2020
- More and more damaged trees cut down in the past few years
- Proportion of trees with severe crown defoliation increases
WIESBADEN – In the past few years, German forests have suffered during hot and dry periods. Pests such as bark beetles proliferate especially in already weakened trees and their populations may increase dramatically until they become a threat to forest resources. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), 32 million cubic metres of timber infested by insects were logged in 2019, which is almost thrice the volume of damaged timber logged in 2018 (11 million cubic metres). In 2017 the figure was 6 million cubic metres.
