WIESBADEN – The low traffic volume owing to the coronavirus pandemic had an impact also on the number of road traffic accidents in May 2020. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the number of traffic accidents dropped by 23% to 181,000 from May 2019. A decline was also seen in the number of traffic accident fatalities. According to provisional results, 237 people died in road traffic accidents in Germany in May 2020. This was a decrease of 6.3% on May 2019 (253 fatalities). The number of people killed in traffic accidents in May 2020 was the lowest ever recorded in a month of May since German reunification in 1990. Furthermore the number each of traffic accidents and of people injured in May 2020 has been the lowest in a month of May ever since.
