More electricity from renewable energy sources than from conventional energy sources

WIESBADEN – In the first quarter of 2020, a total of 72.3 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity were produced from renewable energy sources and fed into the grid in Germany. For the first time, this was more than electricity produced from conventional energy sources. According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the quantity of electricity from renewable energy sources was up by 14.9% on the 1st quarter of 2019, reaching 51.2% of the total electricity feed-in. The largest increase (+21.4%) was recorded for electricity from wind power, which is due mainly to a very windy quarter.

Wind power (34.9% of the total electricity feed-in) was for the first time the most important energy source for electricity production. Electricity fed in from conventional energy sources was down by 21.9%. Especially the proportion of coal-generated electricity was markedly down on the 1st quarter of 2019 (-33.4%).
