WIESBADEN – More than a third (35%) of the overindebted people who sought help from a debt advice centre in 2019 had at least one dependent child in their household. This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), based on the results of the overindebtedness statistics 2019, to mark the Debt Counselling Awareness Week from 25 to 29 May 2020, whose motto this year is "Children without a chance? Growing up well despite overindebtedness!". Nearly another 10% of the overindebted people had at least one child who lived outside the household. In 2019, a total of over 580,000 people sought help from debt or insolvency advice centres because of financial problems.

Basic data and long time series are available in tables "Statistics on overindebtedness (63511)" in the GENESIS-Online database.
