Press release No. 119 of 2 April 2020
WIESBADEN – Germany has a high density of intensive care beds in hospitals compared with other countries. As the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports, this is shown by a comparison by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) which draws upon various surveys conducted in ten of its member states in the years 2013 to 2020. According to that comparison, Germany had 33.9 intensive care beds for 100,000 inhabitants, with that number being increased further in the current situation of crisis.
Bed density was comparable in Austria and the United States (28.9 and 25.8 intensive care beds per 100,000 inhabitants respectively). Intensive care bed capacity was markedly lower in the countries currently hit particularly hard by the coronavirus pandemic: Spain had 9.7 and Italy 8.6 intensive care beds per 100,000 inhabitants.
