Environmental protection expenditure of the national economy accounting for more than 2.2% of the gross domestic product

WIESBADEN – In 2017, enterprises, households and general government in Germany spent 70.4 billion euros on environmental protection. According to calculations of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this was an increase in the environmental protection expenditure of the national economy of nearly 5% on a year earlier. The expenditure rose to more than 2.2% of the gross domestic product. Compared with 2016, environmental investments (+9.5%) increased much more significantly than the current environmental protection expenditure (+3.9%). The increase in environmental investments was higher than any time since 2011.
