Press Impact of extreme wind and weather conditions on the forests

Press release No. N 006 of 12 February 2020

WIESBADEN – At the beginning of this week, schools remained closed in many places, trains did not run and flights were cancelled as a direct consequence of winter storm "Sabine". Other consequences of extreme weather situations become apparent later. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that in 2018 the amount of wood logged due to wind and storm damage totalled 18.5 million cubic metres and was four times higher than in 2017 (4.7 million cubic metres of wood logged after wind and storm damage). The storms that had crossed the country before were “Xavier" (beginning of October 2017), "Herwart" (end of October 2017), and "Friederike" (January 2018).
