Press New area atlas reveals large regional differences as to how areas are used as a resource

Interactive maps show land use at municipality level

Press release No. 485 of 16 December 2019

WIESBADEN – In Germany, there are large differences between municipalities as to how they use areas as a scarce resource. In Munich, the housing and transport area used per inhabitant was 159 square metres in 2017. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this is the lowest per-capita area used for housing and transport purposes in Germany. At the other end of the scale, there are nine municipalities with 10,000 or more square metres of housing and transport area per inhabitant. The above and other differences in land use at municipality level are shown by the statistical offices of the Federation and the Länder in their new online atlas on land use (only in german).
