WIESBADEN – At the beginning of the current school year 2019/2020, a total of 733,000 children started school in Germany. This was a rise of 4,600, or 0.6%, compared with a year earlier. Based on provisional results, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the largest increases in the number of school beginners were recorded in Hamburg (+3.4%) and Berlin (+3.2%). The increase in the number of school beginners observed since school year 2016/2017 continued. However, the number of children starting school declined in some of the Länder. The largest percentage decline was recorded in Schleswig-Holstein (-5.0%).
