Press release No. 427 of 5 November 2019
WIESBADEN – The current life expectancy of newborn girls is 83.3 years and that of newborn boys 78.5 years. Based on the results of the life table for 2016/2018, the Federal Statistical Office also reports that the life expectancy of girls and boys in Germany was up by roughly 0.1 years compared with the previous calculation (2015/2017). That figure also is the average annual change recorded over the past ten years.
This means that the slowed increase in life expectancy persists, a trend which was observed since the calculations of 2007/2009. Before that, life expectancy at birth had been very stable for decades with an average annual increase of roughly 0.2 years for girls and approximately 0.3 years for boys.
