• Overnight stays in the new Länder at first increased strongly after 1993
• Larger growth in western Germany from 2008 to 2018

WIESBADEN– In the last ten years, the number of tourist overnight stays has increased less strongly in the new Länder than in the former territory of the Federal Republic (excluding Berlin in both cases). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the number of overnight stays in hotels, guest-houses and other accommodation establishments in the new Länder grew by 18%, to 82.6 million, from 2008 to 2018. In the former territory of the Federal Republic, it rose by 29% to 362.5 million in the same period. In united Germany including Berlin, roughly 478 million tourist overnight stays were counted in 2018, which was an increase of 29% from 2008.
