WIESBADEN – On balance, the number of young first semester students from western Germany that are attracted by higher education institutions in eastern Germany is higher than that of young people from the East who go to west German higher education institutions. In academic year 2017 (summer semester and subsequent winter semester), the number of first semester students moving from west German Länder to eastern Germany was by roughly 2,400 higher in total than vice versa. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that 2017 was the eighth year in a row that saw net migration of first semester students to eastern Germany.
