Press Danger to a child’s best interests in 2018:
youth welfare offices report a 10% increase in cases

Press release No. 337 of 6 September 2019

WIESBADEN – In 2018, the youth welfare offices in Germany recognised an endangerment of the best interests of a child or young person in roughly 50,400 cases. This was an increase of about 4,700 cases, or 10%, compared with a year earlier. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was not only the highest increase, but also the largest number of cases of danger to a child’s best interests recorded since the statistics were introduced in 2012. The youth welfare offices investigated a total of roughly 157,300 suspected cases based on a danger assessment procedure.
