Press release No. 235 of 21 June 2019
WIESBADEN – In the first quarter of 2019, a total of 62 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity were produced from renewable energy sources in Germany and fed into the German grid. According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this was a 13.7% increase on the same quarter a year earlier. This development was mainly due to a very windy first quarter of the year. The quantity of electricity produced from wind power increased by 23.2% in this period. By contrast, the quantity produced from coal declined markedly by 20%. Nonetheless coal continued to be the main energy source in electricity production (32% proportion), followed by wind power (27%) and nuclear energy (13%).
