WIESBADEN – In 2018, two in ten overindebted persons who sought advice from a debt advice centre in Germany were affected by rent arrears. This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the basis of results from the overindebtedness statistics 2018, to coincide with the Debt Counselling Awareness Week from 3 to 7 June 2019. There are marked differences between the former territory of the Federal Republic and the new Länder (including Berlin). In the new Länder, almost one in three (31%) sought advice from a debt advice centre on rent arrears, whereas this applied to only just under one in five overindebted persons in the former territory of the Federal Republic (18%).
