Press Naturalisations in 2018: special Brexit effect seems to have weakened

Press release No. 203 of 29 May 2019

Number of naturalisations of British citizens decreased

WIESBADEN – In 2018, 112,300 foreigners obtained the German citizenship. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the number of naturalisations of British citizens was down from 7,500 in 2017 to 6,600. This might indicate a weakening of the special effect that started in 2016 and suggests a connection with the coming Brexit. From 2016 to 2018, a total of 17,000 British citizens were naturalised. In the preceding 15 years, there were a total 4,800 naturalisations of British citizens.
