WIESBADEN – The area used for cultivating winter rape has decreased by 28% in 2019 on a year earlier. Based on first estimates, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that farmers in Germany are growing winter rape to be harvested in 2019 on 886,700 hectares. This is a decline of 336,800 hectares. The cultivation of winter rape has decreased in all Länder. Signs of this decline could already be observed when the autumn seeding areas were recorded at the end of 2018. It is due to the long drought period in 2018, which influenced also the sowing date of winter rape.
