Number of women opting for vocational training in the dual system is declining
WIESBADEN – Roughly 519,700 people in Germany concluded a new apprenticeship contract within the dual system (enterprise/vocational school) in 2018. According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this was an increase of 4,000 contracts, or 0.8%, compared with 2017. However, it was only men who contributed to this increase. While the number of men who concluded a new contract increased by 7,400, or 2.3%, year on year, the number of new apprenticeship contracts concluded by women decreased by 3,400, or 1.8%, continuing the downward trend of the previous 10 years. Compared with 2008, the number of new apprenticeship contracts concluded by women declined by 25%.
