Press 70% of municipal sewage sludge incinerated in 2017

Press release No. 484 of 12 December 2018

WIESBADEN – In the period from 2007 to 2017, the quantity of disposed sewage sludge from municipal waste water treatment plants in Germany decreased from just under 2.1 million tonnes to 1.7 million tonnes of dry matter (-17%). One of the reasons for the decline is improved methods of waste water and sewage sludge treatment in the sewage treatment plants, which reduced the quantity of sewage sludge to be disposed of. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the proportion of incinerated sewage sludge (thermal disposal) increased by 20 percentage points from 50% to 70% in the same period.

Basic data and long time series are available in table Dry matter of sewage sludge disposed of directly from waste water treatment plants (32214-0001) in the GENESIS-Online database
