WIESBADEN – The number of births in 2017 (roughly 785,000 babies) was by about 7,000 lower compared with 2016. This decline was due to the slightly smaller average number of children per woman. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the total fertility rate was 1.57 children per woman in 2017. In the previous year, it stood at 1.59.
