WIESBADEN – The area under winter wheat, the main type of grain grown in Germany, has declined by nearly 6% in 2018 on a year earlier. Based on first estimates, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that, on 2.95 million hectares, farmers in Germany have cultivated winter wheat for harvest in 2018. This is a decline of 174,000 hectares compared with 2017. The winter wheat area accounts for 51% of the total area under grain.
