Press Rates of childlessness by status in employment and education converge

WIESBADEN – The final rate of childless women rose just slightly from 20% in 2012 to 21% in 2016, following a long-term increase. It remained constant at 21% also among the total of women in employment. To mark the International Women's Day, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the differences in childlessness between women with different status in employment have decreased. The lowest rate of childlessness was recorded for the second largest group of persons employed (wage earners). It was up from 14% in 2012 to 16% in 2016. At the same time, the highest rate (public officials) fell considerably from 30% to 25%. In the largest group of persons employed (salaried employees), the rate of childlessness remained unchanged at 22%, while among self-employed and freelancers it increased slightly from just under 23% to just over 23%.
