Press Household energy consumption for housing continues to increase

Press release No. 068 of 1 March 2018

WIESBADEN – In 2016, private households in Germany used 665 billion kilowatt hours of energy for housing purposes, which again was an increase on the previous year. According to calculations of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this was a rise of 1.4% on 2015 (temperature adjusted and not including motor fuels). After a decrease until 2014, energy consumption went up by 1.9% in 2015 and then increased in 2016 for the second consecutive year.

The increase was mainly due to the fact that households used more energy for room heating (+2.2%). Room heating accounts for the largest proportion of household energy consumption, at just over 70%.
