Press release No. 212 of 23 June 2017

WIESBADEN – If the trend of people living ever longer continues, boys born in 2017 could reach an average age of up to 90 years, girls up to 93 years. This result is based on the higher variant of the new model calculations of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) regarding cohort life tables of the birth cohorts from 1871 to 2017. According to the lower variant, the average life expectancy of boys born today would be 84 years, that of girls 88 years. Boys and girls born 100 years ago had an average life expectancy of just 55 and 62 years, respectively.
