Press Inland waterways transport in 2015: volume of goods down 3.1%

Press release No. 116 of 4 April 2016

WIESBADEN – In 2015, the volume of goods transported on inland waterways fell by 3.1% compared with the previous year. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that a total of 221.4 million tonnes of goods were transported on German inland waterways in 2015. In 2014, the relevant volume of freight was 228.5 million tonnes. One reason for this decrease probably were the low water levels of important waterways (for example the Rhine), some of which persisted for longer periods.
