Press 39% of internet users do not put personal data online because of security concerns

WIESBADEN – 39% of those aged 10 years or over who used the internet in the last twelve months were deterred from putting personal data on online networks by security concerns. Based on results of the 2015 survey on private use of information and communication technologies (ICT), the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that 25% of the internet users sometimes also refrained from downloading data or files from the internet for security reasons. To be on the safe side, 28% avoided online bank transactions. 

Security concerns regarding the transmission of personal data on the web increased with age. Almost one in two (49%) aged 65 or over, and 41% of the 25 to 64 year olds did not disclose their data online, whereas security concerns were less frequent among those aged 10 to 24 years (26%).
