Voluntary commitment and (reciprocal) monitoring as a basis for quality assurance.

The third round of European Statistical System (ESS) peer reviews is being carried out between 2021 and 2023. This exercise assesses the national statistical authorities’ compliance with the European Statistics Code of Practice. The present article discusses the objectives of this quality assurance tool and provides information about the planned procedure, especially for Germany. The most important result of the peer review will be an official report containing recommendations to the German official statistics bodies which will be taken up in the form of concrete improvement actions. The peer review is of outstanding importance for the development and implementation of innovations within the ESS.
