Zusammen erbringen die G7-Staaten 31 % der globalen Wirtschaftsleistung. Nach dem Einbruch im Pandemiejahr 2020 wuchs die Wirtschaft in allen G7-Staaten 2021 wieder. Das größte Plus verzeichneten das Vereinigte Königreich mit 7,4 % (2020: -9,3 %) und Frankreich 7,0 % (2020: -8,0 %). In Japan fiel das reale Wachstum 2021 mit 1,6 % vergleichsweise moderat aus.

Öffentliche Finanzen und Preisentwicklung
In allen G7-Staaten überstiegen 2021 die jährlichen Ausgaben des Staatssektors die Einnahmen. Die meisten G7-Staaten wiesen neben dem Finanzierungsdefizit für das vergangene Haushaltsjahr auch einen hohen Bruttoschuldenstand auf. Dazu zählt insbesondere Japan, dessen Schuldenlast 263 % des Bruttoinlandsproduktes betrug. Hoch war der Bruttoschuldenstand auch in Italien (151 % des BIP) und den Vereinigten Staaten (133 %). In Deutschland lag er bei 70 % des BIP.
Angeheizt insbesondere von höheren Energiepreisen ist die Inflationsrate in Deutschland, gemessen am Verbraucherpreisindex, 2021 auf 3,2 % gestiegen. Noch deutlicher erhöhten sich die Preise im G7-Vergleich nur in den Vereinigten Staaten (+4,7 %) und Kanada (+3,4 %).
